Virgin Mary THEOTOKOS ("God-bearer") Unisex Short Sleeve T-shirt
Availability: In stock
Mary, the mother of Jesus, was not depicted or discussed often during the first centuries of Christianity. The theological fights of the fourth century were fought for and against the divinity of Christ. Only after Arianism, based on viewing the Son as a mere creature (and not of the same essence as Father), was effectively defeated, did the focus of the Church fathers turn to the humanity of Christ.
In the 5th century CE, two factions, led by Cyril of Alexandria and Nestorius, the bishop of Constantinople at the time, could not reach an agreement regarding the nature of Christ. Did he have two natures (human and divine) or just one? The status of the Virgin Mary was going to be affected by this conflict. The supporters of Nestorius claimed she didn't deserve the title THEOTOKOS ("God-bearer"/"Mother of God") as she merely gave birth to the human nature of Jesus, not the divine one. The orthodox camp disagreed. An Ecumenical Council was organized in Ephesus (431 CE) to resolve the issue. The bishops voted against the opinion of Nestorius. Mary was officially confirmed as the Mother of God.
