Mug with an image of the painting "'The Meeting of Dido and Aeneas" by English painter Sir Nathaniel Dance-Holland.
The painting depicts the legendary hero Aeneas meeting Dido, the queen of Carthage, for the first time. The scene described in Virgil's Aeneid took place in Juno's temple in Carthage. Dido has just met a delegation of Trojan men who had been separated from their friends in a huge storm. The Trojans asked her for permission to seek their leader Aeneas. To everyone's surprise, Aeneas appears just in front of them. He is delighted to see the men alive, and he is even more delighted to meet such a fair queen.
Dido proved to be very helpful and welcoming to the Trojans. Little did she know, that Aeneas would go on breaking her heart and leaving her to die in the following couple of months.
If you admire Aeneas or sympathize with Dido, remember this scene while drinking your coffee or tea.
