Hadrian and Antinous Unisex Short Sleeve T-shirt
Availability: In stock
Hadrian was a Roman Emperor from 117 to 138 CE. He succeeded Trajan, a gifted general, and paid more attention to increasing the stability of the empire than to expanding its borders. He travelled a lot and visited many parts of his empire. Although he was married, he never fathered a child and had to select and adopt his successor Antoninus Pius.
His lack of natural heirs might have been connected to his fondness of another man. The name of that man was Antinous and even the mightiest ruler of the world at the time couldn't resist his charm. Unfortunately, Antinous died in 130 CE in Egypt. The circumstances of his death remain a mystery - we know he drowned in the Nile, but whether it was an accident, suicide or something else, remains unanswered. What we know for sure is that Hadrian was devastated by this loss. To cement the memory of the unfortunate young man, he ensured his deification. Thus Antinous, exceeding humans in beauty, became a god.
The T-shirt depicts the two men and Hadrian's villa in Tivoli.
