Early Christianity

Christianity was born in the Roman empire and its relationship with the Roman state went through many stages. While it was not understood widely at first, the Christians soon became persecuted. The imperial administration went from a stage of ignorance through local persecutions to an open centrally announced attack during the Tetrarchy. After the victory of Constantine, this religion became tolerated and firmly progressed to replace the traditional paganism as the official state religion of the Empire.
